Indian Critical Care Registry

Why do we need an Indian Critical Care Registry?

  • Epidemiology of critical illness in India remains largely undefined
  • Mortality rates are as high as 40-50% from critical illness depending on the severity of disease, location and type of Intensive care unit, access to health care and affordability
  • Data is sparse on the geographical spread, resource availability, staffing patterns, case mix and outcomes for ICUs across India
  • Several high income countries have well established critical care registries that have improved outcomes from critical illness (e.g. ICNARC, ANZICS CORE)
  • Recently lower and middle income countries have started their own registries (NICST and Epimed)
  • IRIS represents the first such endeavour in India
